The Paris Psalter, created in France ca. 1230 (currently located in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal Paris, MS. 1186, f. 17) contains the earliest depiction that I have found so far of an object that seems to belong in the Shepherds Purse category. The object consists of a lozenge-oriented net that is either hung at both ends from the belt or is slung by a strap over the shoulder. The earliness of this example compared with the "heyday" of the style (and the general scarcity of 13th and 14th century examples) raises interesting questions.
